Trevor Lawrence’s hard and, perhaps, foolish work paid off.
After the Clemson Tigers quarterback threw an interception in the team’s season-opener against the unranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Lawrence tracked down defensive back Tre Swilling for a tackle on the 2-yard line. Lawrence, who is so competitive that he shoved an opponent in intramural basketball, probably shouldn’t have sacrificed the body to stop the defender. Lawrence projects to be the No. 1 overall pick when he declares for the NFL draft. He was putting a lot of money on the line with that tackle.
Still, his defense made the play count. On the following set of downs, Georgia Tech gained just one yard before throwing an interception of their own for Clemson to retake the ball. On the drive that followed that goal-line stop, Lawrence threw a 62-yard touchdown pass for a 28-0 lead. In other words, his shoulder looked OK after the tackle.
Still, that didn’t stop media members and fans from getting a little nervous.
That said, many fans weren’t even mad — just impressed.
Maybe Lawrence didn’t use his throwing shoulder to make contact and maybe his tackle kept points off the board, but Lawrence should probably think about the millions of dollars he’s due in the NFL Draft. With that thought in mind, he’s got to let Swilling go.
